So' Dine' - Navajo Star Wheel
The Star Wheel is a map of the night sky that helps the viewer learn about the Navajo Way of understanding the stars, the Universe, and life. Knowing the positions and movements of the stars allows you to understand seasonal cycles and their associated activities. Individual stars and constellation patterns have related stories and teachings that provide a framework and foundation for living a good life.
This Star Wheel can be used with the Constellation poster set, Na'atlo (String Games), and Winter Storytelling, although the Star Wheel can be used throughout the year. The Wheel measures 8" diameter and is attached to a sturdy "envelope" with a grommet. Milky Way, prominent stars and constellations are identified in Navajo language. Directions and months are easy to read. The Star Wheel is easy to use: simply stand in one place and align yourself with the appropriate direction on the wheel. Turn the wheel to the date and month on the outer ring. Then observe the star patterns in the night sky and match with
those identified on the wheel.
The Star Wheel also includes a flat map/diagram in black and white that can be helpful in learning more about star positions and magnitude of brightness.
